Monty’s Brewery was founded in 2009 by husband-and-wife team Russ and Pam Honeyman. Both were looking for a career change, having moved back from America after working there for four and a half years. Russ had been working as a design consultant in Austin, Texas, and Pam, originally a primary school teacher, was working in the charity sector.

Russ started a beer, wine, and spirits wholesale company. At the time, there were only a handful of breweries in Wales. Russ was constantly being asked, “What real ales can you get me?” Eventually, he turned to Pam and asked, “This real ale malarkey is really taking off—do you fancy learning how to brew?” Pam said yes, enrolled in a course at Brewlab, and immediately fell in love with brewing. The rest, as they say, is history!

Since then, they have established Monty's as one of the leading breweries in Wales. In 2024, the brewery received a major investment from Ubunto Business Holdings, with plans to expand the facility. Producing real ales of many styles, with a focus on gluten-free beers, the brewery prides itself on its award-winning range. Brewing a beer everyone can enjoy.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Monty’s Brewery takes sustainability seriously. Here are just some of the things we do:

Reduce

  • Water usage: We use refined cleaning regimens to ensure we don’t use excessive chemicals or rinse water.

  • Energy usage: We maximize energy recovery to heat water and have added extra insulation to our cold and warm rooms.

  • Plastic waste: We reduce our use of plastic shrink wrap by utilizing pallet collars, and we do not use any plastic in the packaging for our online orders.

Reuse

  • Cardboard boxes: We reuse boxes by re-badging them whenever possible.

  • Casks: Casks have always been the ultimate sustainable container—they are filled, sent out, returned, cleaned, refilled, and reused.

Recycle

  • General materials: We recycle all glass, plastic, and cardboard that cannot be used elsewhere.

  • Grain into milk! We extract the sugars and flavours from the grain during brewing, which leaves behind protein-rich spent grain. Cows are very efficient at turning this into milk.

  • Waste beer into beef: Waste beer (the bits that are too yeasty) is recycled into beef. A local herd of Wagyu cattle has a few pints of Monty’s and then a nap!

Recover

  • Excess products: We recover excess products to make gin, chutney, Christmas puddings, and beef jerky.

  • Hot water: We recover hot water to be used for cleaning or in the next brew.
